Menopause Management

Menopause is a natural occurrence that takes place in every woman's life. The process usually takes place between the ages of 45 to 55 years, with the average age of the last menstrual period at age 51. During menopause, women produce less estrogen and menstrual periods stop. Decreasing estrogen levels or lack of estrogen can cause bothersome symptoms in some women. Dr. To understands that these symptoms are real and offers the full range of effective solutions for menopause management to make this stage of life more comfortable.

Estrogen reductions can cause hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and osteoporosis (bone density loss). The decision to treat the symptoms of menopause is individualized and personal. Dr. To genuinely listens to concerns and takes the time to explain menopause management options in terms that women can understand. Hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone can help, and Dr. To helps women determine the best course for safe short-term symptom management.

There are several forms of bio-identical hormones available -- from pills and vaginal inserts to skin products. Dr. To will carefully explain the risks and benefits of each to help his patients make informed decisions. Dr. To can also recommend lifestyle changes and exercises to help keep bones strong and reduce the risk of broken bones.

Uterine fibroids are common growths in the uterus. Uterine fibroids are usually benign and may or may not cause symptoms. Some fibroids can be bothersome, depending on the size, location, and number of them. The exact cause of fibroids is unknown; however, they appear to be influenced by the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Just as female hormones change over the course of a woman's life, so can fibroids.

Fibroids develop in the muscle tissue of the uterus. Fibroids range widely in size from pea-sized to more than 5-6 pounds, filling the pelvis or abdomen. Women between the ages of 30 and 40 most frequently develop fibroids, but they may develop at any age. African-American women experience the greatest incidence of fibroids, and these uterine growths develop faster in this population as well.

Fibroids can cause changes in menstrual patterns, painful cramps, constipation, and urinary difficulties. Dr. To can identify uterine fibroids with a pelvic exam or ultrasound imagery, as well as other gynecologic tests. Fibroids that do not cause symptoms do not need treatment and may go away on their own.

If fibroid treatment is needed, Dr. To is an expert in the management of fibroids and uses state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical techniques, including embolization and surgery with micro-surgical techniques (myomectomy).

The laser works by stimulating collagen production in the interlining of the vagina - improving the health and pliability of the vaginal mucosa. It’s a specialized CO2 fractional laser that’s specifically designed to treat atrophic or thin sensitive vaginal wall. The laser has unique characteristics of penetrating light or laser energy deep into the layers of the vaginal wall in such a way that it stimulates collagen and returns the vaginal tissue to a state that was present prior to the changes induced by menopause or other conditions.
